The European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) is a fund that supports the EU maritime, fisheries and aquaculture policies and runs from 2021 to 2027, replacing the former European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). On 7 July 2021, the European Parliament and the Council adopted the Regulation governing it: No. 2021/1139.
EMFAF 2021-2027 Priorities
Article 3 of the specific EMFAF regulation sets out the four EU strategic priorities for 2021-2027, aimed at the sustainable development of fisheries, aquaculture and other maritime activities.
- PRIORITY 1: Fostering sustainable fisheries and the restoration and conservation of aquatic biological resources.
- PRIORITY 2: Fostering sustainable aquaculture activities, and processing and marketing of fishery and aquaculture products, thus contributing to food security in the European Union.Fostering sustainable aquaculture activities, and processing and marketing of fishery and aquaculture products, thus contributing to food security in the European Union.
- PRIORITY 3: Enabling a sustainable blue economy in coastal, island and inland areas, and fostering the development of fishing and aquaculture communities.
- PRIORITY 4: Strengthening international ocean governance and enabling seas and oceans to be safe, secure, clean and sustainably managed.
The EMFAF urges EU member states to invest in making the fisheries and aquaculture sectors more competitive, boosting a sustainable blue economy, developing new markets and technologies, and protecting and restoring marine biodiversity.
Completion of new facilities in the fishing area of Pasaia Port
The project for the completion of the new facilities in the fishing area of Pasaia Port falls under priority 1 and is co-funded by EMFAF. Some of the actions to be carried out include:
- Replacement of lighting systems with more efficient alternatives using LED technology.
- Resurfacing.
- Modernisation of the fire protection installation.
- Implementation of an air-conditioning system based on marine geothermal energy that will make it possible to take advantage of the constant temperature of the water in the bay to maintain the cool temperature that is required throughout the year.
The project also includes the installation of a second freight lift that will give direct access to the basement car park, as well as a telematic electrical consumption control system.
A fish processing room will also be set up to improve fishing activity and the necessary pre-installations will be made to include online auctions.
